Peter Murphy is a freelance photographer based in the New York area specializing in people and environments.
His work has appeared in publications such as Time, Wired, Scientific American, and The New York Times among others. He has received awards from Nikon, Communication Arts, and the Art Directors Clubs in NY, NJ, Boston and Chicago. In 2018 he received ASMP's award for the best editorial photography of the year.
Born in New York City, he studied international politics in Philadelphia, and returned to New York to pursue his love of photography. For three years he was the assistant to the legendary photographer Jay Maisel where he was often found sweeping the corner of Bowery & Spring Street and sometimes flying around the world. He went on to become a location scout for movies and ads before starting his own career in magazine photography.
